This is the moment a basketball stand collapsed on a man as he made a dunk at a fitness centre in eastern China.

In the CCTV clip, shot in Hangzhou City in Zhejiang Province on Tuesday (July 17), the basketball stand falls on the man’s head, pinning him to the floor, after he jumped up to land a shot and hung off the basket.

His two friends can be seen going to try to lift the stand up immediately. More people come to help free the man.

According to reports, the man was a staff member at the fitness centre while the basketball stand had just been moved to the centre and its installation had not been completed.

The man would go back to work after surgery and some rest, local media reported an HR manager at the fitness centre of saying.

JOPLIN, Mo. — A high school student was killed Thursday when he was apparently crushed by a basketball goal in the gymnasium of a local elementary school.

Joplin High School students mourned the unusual, accidental death of their classmate, 18-year-old Spencer Nicodemus. Nicodemus was volunteering at Irving Elementary School in the city of 50,000, when he was killed during an accident in the gymnasium.

Jasper County, Missouri, Coroner Rob Chappel said the accident “appears to be some kind of a crush incident.”

He said Nicodemus’s body is being taken to Kansas City for an autopsy scheduled for Friday.

The Joplin School District said emergency medical personnel responded shortly after 9 a.m. and took Nicodemus to the hospital, where he died.

“The student’s family is in our thoughts and hearts during this very difficult time,” said a statement from the district. The Joplin High School athletics department has canceled all practices at the high school today and is making coaches available to students after school

Joplin police Capt. Rusty Rives said the police department would investigate.

“As a matter of protocol, we are conducting an investigation into what happened,” he said. “There’s no sign of anything criminal. We’ll investigate from that and go from there.”

Brandon Eggleston, principal of Joplin High School, said counselors would be available to students.

“We’ve got additional counselors (at the high school) now to help out, and we’re there for our kids,” he said. “We’re grieving, and we’re supporting our students through that process.”

Steve Gilbreth, assistant superintendent of learning services, said in a recorded telephone message to parents that counselors also would be placed at Irving.

“Students are being allowed the time to talk to counselors, and those processes are being made available to them,” he said.

Batting Cage Falls from Ceiling at College Rec Center

At least five people were injured when part of a batting cage that was suspended from the ceiling fell to the floor and bleachers of the gymnasium at the Goshen (IN) College Roman Gingerich Recreation-Fitness Center.

A summer league high school volleyball match was about to start when the cage fell at around 6:40 p.m. Monday night, Goshen College said. Four parents of high school players and a Goshen College student assisting with the match were struck by the cage, the college said. The injured persons were treated at a nearby hospital, and none of the injuries were life-threatening, according to the school. One person remained hospitalized on Tuesday, according to reports.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with each of the persons injured by this accident and their families,” Bill Born, vice president of student life at Goshen College, said in a statement.

The gymnasium was evacuated immediately after the incident. The gym remains closed but the rest of the rec center is open, according to reports. Goshen College said school officials and outside experts will be investigating the cause of the accident.

“It is kind of a strange event,” Born told the Goshen News. “We will do our legwork checking all the different components to see what is the issue, but that will take a little bit of time.”

Jodi Beyeler, spokesperson for Goshen College, said the incident was a “freak accident,” according to The Elkhart (IN) Truth.

Five Injured by Falling Batting Cage in Gym

It wasn’t the action on the court that got fans’ hearts pumping at a high school summer volleyball match held at Goshen College Recreational-Fitness Center in Indiana this past Monday.

Just before a match was scheduled to start, the steel cables of a ceiling-suspended baseball cage broke, causing the structure to fall onto a section of bleachers.

“There was a large pop and then one of the sides came down and there was more pops and then I saw the nets coming down,” Goshen student Sam Heberling told Goshen News. “I was reffing on that court. I was under it. It came down on me. It hit me in the hand and wrist and it is a little sore.”

Heberling and four adults attending a high school summer volleyball league game sustained injuries. Three were taken to a hospital to be evaluated while the gym was evacuated and the evening’s events cancelled. As of Tuesday afternoon, one of the victims remained in the hospital in fair condition.

School officials say this is the first time they have had any problems with the cage and will be investigating the cause of the incident.

“It is kind of a strange event,” said vice president of student affairs Bill Born. “We will do our legwork checking all the different components to see what is the issue, but that will take a little bit of time.”
